Is the old saying ';Knowledge is power'; true, and if so, to what extent?

Discuss relevant answers, keeping an eye to detail. You have up to 10 minutes to respond (although I fail to see why it should take so long). Is the old saying ';Knowledge is power'; true, and if so, to what extent?
true to the extent that knowledge is needed to overcome or win a situation/war etc.Is the old saying ';Knowledge is power'; true, and if so, to what extent?
Knowledge is not power, however it does empower anyone who wields it correctly. If I know how to make electronic circuitry, I can give light to the darkness.
As far as I know, the quote, ';Knowledge itself is power'; Nam et ipsa scienta protestas est. is from Francis Bacon and reffered to espionage and the scuzzy side of court politics. It was not intended as a noble statement, but really about controlling people by having information on them to blackmail and manipulate them with.

As far as I am concerned, on a personal level, to me it means knowledge means opportunity as ignorance goes nowhere.
'Knowlegde IS power.'

its power because the more you know, the superior you are.

knowledge, as in knowing..
What's with the 10 minutes to respond bit? You can't pick a best answer for a few hours at least anyway!

Knowledge is definitely power. One main example is how before the Civil war the south US made sure to keep their slaves uneducated. If the slaves learned that the Sun rose in the East and set in the West, they could run away to the North and get away. But, keeping that knowledge from them, they were able to keep them from running away as much.

Another example. Someone with a high school education against someone with a college education going for the same job. College person is going to get it hands down. Why? More education = more knowledge.

Now, to what extent? To no extent! Knowledge is power......... period! If you know how to make a super nuclear missile, you have more power and destructive ability with it! If have the knowledge of how to keep people in fear or how to persuade them to help, you can use that too! All power is fueled by knowledge.
Power without knowledge doesn't get much satisfaction. It's knowing you have power that makes it fun. Like knowing you can motivate people to answer silly questions by giving arbitrary deadlines. Without the knowledge, what fun would it be?
It is true to the extent of knowing how to react, what should be done in a situation, why something has happened and how to fix it, and much more. The list is endless as to how knowledge is key to success. In times of war, you have to know your enemy's methods of warfare plus what they use in order to make an effective decision as to how to combat that. When there is someone doing harm, it is important to know why they/he/she did it so we can develop an efficient persuasion or plan. Let's say you are looking around the store, and you see an advertisement for something that costs a huge amount of money. It would be ridiculous to just buy it without knowing more about it first.

Research and wisdom are powerful allies in the world of situations and obstacles. Research gives you the tool of knowledge you need to make important choices. Wisdom gives you the key of discipline that is required for interaction between yourself plus another person.
I love this question. I first saw it on mortal kombat the game. it raised a very good point. if we knew how to do everything in the game and the other person did'nt we could always beet the other person. in life the knowledge to manipulate our systems or institutions means an advantage over others. knowledge means power-put insider trading to the test. knowing more than others means money, but also trouble if u r caught.

Its really helpfull to the point where human interaction comes in. you can not always know what another human is going to do. thats where knowlege falls short. maybe the other person will study tom. and be smarter later.

In the end it does'nt mean a lot but, knowlege, if used right could make you a king or a pauper.
Acquiring knowledge is good because it will be our intellectual, moral and spiritual strength. But when such acquired knowledge is not put to practical use in the best manner for either personal benefits or social benefits, and allowed to rust in our body, that is not called dynamic power. It is a static power. I am sorry I am poor in expressing my views.
Wealthier nations have more knowledgeable people, which in effect makes such nations wealthier, and thus more powerful, in comparison to countries with less knowledgeable people. The more knowledge an individual has, the more their opinion is respected, the more successful they will be, the more money they will make, all of which makes them more powerful.
depends
Knowledge is simply a commodity. Unemployed commodities are inert and neutral. Evidently with knowledge, unless it's employed, it remains powerless. Many people go to University to learn useless degrees and end up as dishwashers. Therefore knowledge contains no intrinsic power. Productive, or destructive use of knowledge becomes powerful.

A tool is only as good as the craftsman. We need to use the right tool for any job. Those who know how to use knowledge and can use it effectively develop power.
Yes. He who controls the horizon, controls the vertical, controls you.
Your attitude is definitely draconian conservative, which I fail to see why. Of course knowledge is power, especially the spiritual kind. From our direction or level, knowing who you are gives you occult power to the degree of creating an entire universe. Then beyond that you eventually know yourself, who is God, and who is power, knowledge and bliss. However, once you know that, you're unconscious of creation for the rest of eternity, so what are you going to do with power and knowledge, if you can't use it? At least you got bliss.
The perfect example of this, in the American context, would be J Edgar Hoover, first director of the FBI.

He had FILES on everyone, so he could use his '; knowledge '; as a power over them. He scared even Presidents, with his ability to find the dirt on them, or their families. Despite being a sexual deviate, who loved to dress up in woman's clothing and have sex with his Deputy Director, he outlasted 7 Presidents. That is POWER, and it was based on KNOWLEDGE.
