Belief is a personal commitment to a set of ideas.





The set of ideas may be real, like science: or delusional, like religion.





It is still Belief.
Belief is to identify with something or someone to feel a part of it and feel it to be a part of you.


With no evidence or current rational fact.


A belief ultimately needs believers. Therefore may have no independent existence.


It has no place in scientific exploration. If it does appear at all as a possibility based on current knowledge, such as a theory or speculation. Then it said to be so.


A theory is what it is.


In belief the only certainty you have is that you have no certainty.
You may be mixing knowledge with faith.


You can know things that can be proven, like math and science.





You must accept on faith things that can't be proven, like God exists and God has a plan.
Belief is related to truth. It is our understanding of what we can see and what we can't see. My beliefs may be different to yours yet we both believe in what we understand to be true.





Facts are something different.
That is a wrong definition of belief.


Belief is something a person holds to be true.


A justified true belief is called knowledge[1].


A belief that is not justified is often called ';blind faith';.
Maybe its our way of filling in the gaps between the facts in order to form a usable map of the world, one in which we feel comfortable and can function. For sure this applies to religion, and I bet in science too there are vast tracts of ';givens'; which allow people to make logical assumptions and step closer to the truth.
